The second prompt for Sketch Design Repeat’s 3×3 challenge was ‘Tropical Paradise’. This immediately brought to mind tropical Australia, a place I visited in my teenage years. I tried to bring together some unique tropical plants and animals for the first pattern. A cassowary strolls past a traveller’s palm; a green tree frog hangs out with hibiscus flowers; a goanna sits alert beneath a cordyline. Maybe not totally accurate but… artistic license helps things look nice!

The second pattern layers lots of tropical foliage together. I’m pleased with the orange seed pod and how it contrasts so well with the leaves.

The third pattern is mostly mangoes and fruitbats, troppo indeed!

Evaluation

I would not have thought to do something with a tropical theme without this prompt, and I’m really happy with how these turned out. I used brighter colours than usual and it brings a nice variation to my body of work.
