Milford Track – Kea

At McKinnon pass, the highest point on the Milford Track, a Kea flies above the snow with McKinnon memorial in the background.

On 17 October 1888 the route from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound, now famous as the Milford Track, was discovered by Quintin McKinnon and Ernest Mitchell.

McKinnon went missing in 1892, presumed drowned. The memorial cairn at MacKinnon pass was built in 1914.

Fiordland’s most famous inhabitant, the kea, continues to delight visitors to the Milford Track.
