Milford Track – Finest Walk

A light aircraft flies over spectacular Sutherland falls, along the Milford Track – ‘the finest walk in the world’.

This phrase was coined by poet Blanche Baughan in 1908. New Zealand’s Milford Track winds for 53.5km through the heart of Fiordland to Milford Sound.

On 17 November 1938, a Southland Airways Puss Moth, very much like the one pictured, made the first landing at Milford Sound. Because of World War II, it took another 14 years for an airstrip to be built. The first official landing was achieved in May 1952.
