Humpback whales pass Milford Sound every year on their migration route towards their summer feeding grounds in Antarctica. Many of these are from populations that breed along the east coast of Australia.
They feed on krill along the Fiordland coast, and on occasion will venture further inside the fiords. These visits make for a magical experience if you’re lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.
