The steamship Tawera transports tourists across Lake Te Anau to Glade Wharf and the start of the Milford Track circa 1926.
The SS Tawera was buit in Dunedin. It was railed in sections to Mossburn and carried by bullock wagons, then assembled at Bluegum Point, Te Anau. She was launched on 22 February 1899 and began to provide lake excursions and trips to the start of the Milford Track. At decommisioning in 1996, the Tawera was the longest serving vessel in New Zealand. The Tawera is now stored in the yard of the Workshop Division of Real Journeys.
