ZK-AMA Short Flying Boat ‘Aotearoa’ doing a ‘touch-and-go’ past Mitre Peak in Milford Sound.

The ‘Aotearoa’ was the first TEAL (Tasman Empire Airways Limited) aircraft delivered to New Zealand. After three survey flights covering Fiji and Rarotonga, it completed its inaugural Auckland-Sydney service in April 1940. Aotearoa went on to fly 442 trans-Tasman crossings between 1940-1947. TEAL was the forerunner of Air New Zealand.

Although I’m not sure if ‘Aotearoa’ ever visited Milford Sound, I like to think that, at some point, the pilots made a special detour.
