Having lived and worked in Fiordland for over ten years, it was a natural choice for the focus of my next pattern collection. There is so much to Fiordland that I feel I didn’t quite have enough room to do it justice.
I wanted to experiment a little with pattern layout this time. The main pattern captures mountains, forest, and fiord and has quite the population of wildlife!
I pared everything back on the second pattern – ‘Fiord’. I love the subtle linework and the style of repeat on this one. And how perfectly it coordinates with the main pattern.
‘Lancewood’ has a nice soft appearance despite it’s saw-leafed motifs. And lastly ‘Mountains’ is a tribute to the rain, the sweeping peaks and the cheeky kea.
I made the third pattern a bit of a study on Fiordland’s local legend, the takahe. And I couldn’t leave out the kiwi and tawaki / Fiordland crested penguin. ‘Tawaki Gang’ has two colourways because I just could not decide!
Have a look at these and other patterns in my Spoonflower shop!
Evaluation
This was an ambitious idea which may have been more cohesive if the theme wasn’t so vast! I ended up with more pattern ideas than could fit comfortably in the collection. I feel that both the main and ‘Fiord’ pattern fit the collection the best.
